To All -
Tonight was a classic light air night on the Tappan Zee. After blowing most
of the day from the northeast, the wind died and switched around to a light
shifting southerly. Skippers had to decide whether it was better to go out
river where there seemed to be more wind, but also more current, or was it
better to go inshore and stay out of the current risking less wind? A great
Hudson River enigma.
For the first time in a longtime the Race Committee shortened course (thank
you Race Committee!), ending the non-spinnaker group at mark E, and the
spinnaker group at mark A. The spinnaker group took their own finish times
and the system appeared to work well. Constructive comments on this topic
might be welcome.
One last thought - the scoring system allows for two ways to leave a race
without crossing the finish line. The first is to voluntarily withdraw and
accept a DNF (Did Not Finish). The second is to hang in there until the
bitter end and accept a TLE (Time Limit Expired) when the two hour time
limit is up. A DNF is the number of racers +1, but a TLE is scored the
number of racers + 0. So if scoring is important to you, you might want to
throw out an anchor, pop a beer, and wait for the race to be over. Just
sayin'.
. This Friday is our first outdoor movie night. Come see the classic
JAWS under a full moon. If you row out to your boat in your dinghy (or
better still, swim out to your boat !!) after watching the movie, we'll
deliver a free beer in admiration.
. Coast Guard Inspections are this Saturday. Reserve your slot time
with Dave Horton (dahorton@verizon.net), bring your boat into the dock, and
earn your Coast Guard sticker. Your efforts will pay off when the local
gendarmes don't stop your boat and haul you in for inspection. [Yes, they
can do that and - like crossing the border - the local cowboys are
omnipotent]. So minimize their fun by getting inspected this Saturday.
See you on the water.
