To All –

Each week more and more boats are joining us for Wednesday Night racing.
Tonight we had a wind that couldn’t make up its mind which way to go, or how
hard to blow. Very frustrating at times. The racing results are attached. A
big congratulations to Charlie Brieant from Shattemuc in Zoom for doing an
horizon job.

If you see Mike Leinweber, please tell him to join the Cruising Fleet and
get a PHRF if he wants to be scored. This is the second week he has raced
and dropped out.

John Michael sent the following e-mail yesterday:

Sunday racing last weekend at the Nyack Boat Club was just a beautiful day
to be out on the water. What a perfect excuse to be on a boat, going around
a race course on a Sunday afternoon. The temperature was around 70° with
winds from the SSW at 10-15 MPH. Race course 13 was the choice of the Race
Committee (C-E-A-Finish) which happens to be the long course, and it was so
much fun that we all did it again. Pentimento, (Bob Millstein and friends
from Shattemuc), Tony Martin in Sheba, and we in  Spirit were the
racer-cruisers of the day. Matt Lydon (Galatea) and Larry Nathanson in
Indiscreet were some of the cruisers in the Fleet taking in the sun and
enjoying a beautiful day out on the water. The Galley was open and the patio
was filled with one design racers and Cruisers. Thanks to our wonderful Race
Committee for making this event shine.

Back to Lee - I have copied all of the Sunday racing data to date, and I’ll
report the Sunday corrected results tomorrow.

Several of you have asked me to repeat the PHRF scoring formula again, so
here it is:

Corrected time = Elapsed time * (650/(550 + PHRF)). Note that the formula
(650/(550 + PHRF)) is really nothing more than a percentage. I encourage
everyone to play some “what if my PHRF was” games to get a feel for how much
a PHRF rating affects the elapsed time you spend on the water compared to
your favorite competitor. With a little bit of time you can work out a table
of how much you have to beat your closest competitor by (or vice versa).

This weekend is the Memorial Day Regatta, held only on Saturday this year.
It will be interesting to see if more people get involved than for  the
usual two-day regatta. We have a lot going on, but we hope to see you on the
water this weekend.
